Description

Quilt of white cotton with red, cranberry printed cotton. Thirty motifs, arranged in five columns and six rows, are embroidered with red thread. Motifs include floral patterns and figures inspired by advertisements of the time . One motif near center reads: "1894 / Dewey, Mont." Motif near lower corner reads "A message from the woods." Hand-quilted in small diamond pattern. Backed with white cotton.

Maggie Halbert drew designs by hand while teaching school in a log cabin in Beaverhead County, near Dewey. Halbert's mother stitched the quilt. Halbert used this quilt to keep her students warm when they became ill at school.
