Biographical Text

Charles Beil was born in Germany. In 1906, at the age of twelve, he left his home country to work as a captain’s boy on a sailing ship. Two years later he left ship in Argentina. By the mid-1920s he had worked his way to Montana as an itinerant muleskinner and cowboy. Although primarily a self-taught artist, he was encouraged by Charles M. Russell in his artistic endeavors. Upon Russell's death, Beil lead Russell's horse in his funeral. He moved to Banff in 1934 and established a studio where he created murals, dioramas, and bronze sculptures, and remained active as an artist until his death at the age of eighty-two.
