The Greater Montana Foundation is a philanthropic group which was started by noted Montana radio and television station owner, E.B. Craney in 1958. The foundation is dedicated to the betterment of broadcasting in Montana through both scholarships and grants for worthwhile broadcast productions.

Edmund Craney was a pioneer in Montana radio braodcasting. He was affiliated with Pacific Northwest Broadcasting; XL radio stations of Spokane, Portland, Butte, Bozeman, and Missoula; and the Z Bar network.

Ed Craney seated at a table at an early condenser microphone. Condenser microphones were developed in 1916 by E.C. Wente at Bell Labs and helped overcome frequency issues associated with earlier carbon microphones. Condenser microphones, along with vacuum tube amplifiers, paved the way for sound on film.

Typed notation adhered to verso: "One of the hottest highlights (and we mean "hottest" literally) of the celebration, was the Ground-Breaking Ceremony at the site of the Canyon Ferry Dam project. One of Helena's favorite sons came home for that one--Yes, it's Gary Cooper, who left of f his gum-chewing long enought to draw some real laughter from a record crowd...Familiar ground for the gangling Cooper who admittedly "--used t' do a lot of ridin' a' fishin' right 'round here."

"The Night Owl" program - an all night Saturday night show for DX fans in the mid-thirties, KGIR transmitting control room. Butte, Montana. Left: Ed Craney Right: Emmet Burke. This all-night program was popular with DXers. DXers were radio enthusiasts who sent reception reports to radio stations who send verification cards in return which were avidly collected. Broadcasters used the reports to gauge transmission quality.
