<text>Olaf C. Seltzer was born in Denmark where, displaying an early natural aptitude, he was able to study art for two years at the Technical Society Institute in Copenhagen. In 1892 he immigrated to the United States and thereafter made Montana his home. Finding it difficult to support himself through his art alone, Seltzer worked for the railroad and ultimately became a locomotive repair foreman. His artistic talent was quickly recognized by Montanans including fellow artist Charles M. Russell, from whom he received friendship, artistic inspiration, and encouragement. Although he worked diligently throughout his life, he never achieved the fame of Russell, but was nevertheless able to receive some measure of acclaim in his later years. Today his artwork is highly regarded and is included in museum collections throughout the country.</text>

<text>Assiniboine artist William Standing —also known as Fire Bear—was born in Oswego, Montana, on the Fort Peck Indian Reservation. He attended an agency day school near Oswego, and then boarding school in Wolf Point. In 1920 he attended the Haskell Institute in Kansas where, as the artist recalled, “I was always painting and drawing, but the only training the teachers gave in this line was jobs of painting the outside of buildings at the school”.

Entirely self-taught, Standing was well known for his humorous works which portrayed daily life on the reservation. Standing also created works that depict a more serious side of life including the ways in which his people struggled to make the transition into the white man’s world. He was able to earn a meager living with his humorous sketches that were sold widely as postcards.</text>

<text>Ace Powell was born in Tulerosa, New Mexico. At a young age he moved with his family to the Apgar area of Glacier National Park where he watched Charles M. Russell paint at his nearby summer cabin. When he was 15, Powell was sent to boarding school in Browning where he met and became friends with renowned Western sculptor Bob Scriver. In 1938, after only a few private art lessons, Powell established himself as a full-time artist, sketching and painting what he knew best—the cowboys and the Indians of the Glacier National Park area. Already known as “Ace,” when fellow artist Joe DeYoung recommended that he adopt an artistic "brand" of his own, Powell chose the Ace of Diamonds as his new trademark.</text>
