Strained Relationship

Oscar's strained relationship between his chief of police as the mayor of Lewistown is evident here in this letter.

Excerpt:

"Oscar, I think that interview Ray gave the Democrat about the cause for your complaint against him is the cheapest, meanest, dirtiest, and lowest method of defense I have ever heard of. If you should ever need any evidence of your loyalty or your reputation as to loyalty during the war I shall be glad to testify for you."

 Oscar's problems with Knuck Ray were, however, only to get more complicated.
